SPAN 4070: The 40s and 60s in the United States and Spain
In this reflection, I analyzed the contrasting histories of the United States and Spain during the 1940s and 1960s. Although both countries were recovering from World War II in the 1940s, their social landscapes were entirely different. On one hand, Spain, who was under the dictadorial Franco regime, suffered through food shortages, oppression, strict censorship, and limited rights. At the same time, America flourished with newfound freedoms and an industrial expansion that changed the economy. While comparing both countries during the 1960s, their differences remained. While the United entered their era of Rock and Roll, Spain entered their era of tourism and foreign trade.
Overall, this asssignment helped broaden my historical perspective on the United States and Spain, while also strengthening my technical Spanish skills.
SPAN 4070: The Oppression of Women Under the Franco Regime
In this essay, I explored the oppression and abuse inflicted on women during the Franco regime in Spain from 1939-1975. Unfortunately, Franco's regime was a vast change from the previous Second Republic of Spain, which was a period that promoted women's rights, education, and freedom for all. However, the Franco regime quickly changed to a period that inflicted brutal oppression, stripped women of their rights, and insisted that women were designed to be submissive to men. In the essay, I delve into some of the specific components of the inflicted oppression, such as the influence of the Cathoolic Church and the contribution of different women's groups. By completing this reflection, I was reminded of the injustices faced by women throughout history, highlighting the importance of advocating for women's rights and equality.
