Coursework and Curriculum
During my three and a half years as a student at Clemson University, I have had the privilege of taking vigorous and challenging courses. These courses have not only expanded my knowledge, but my ability to think critically about a myriad of subjects. Please take a look below at the various courses that have shaped my academic experience.
SPANISH
SPAN 2020 - Intermediate Spanish
Intermediate course that advances listening, speaking, and writing in Spanish. A higher level of grammatical structures and basic vocabulary is learned as well as the incorporation of literary and cultural aspects.
SPAN 3050 - Spanish Conversation and Composition I
Practice in spoken Spanish with emphasis on vocabulary, pronunciation, intonation, and comprehension. Includes written work to increase accuracy and assignments in the language laboratory.
SPAN 3070 - The Hispanic World: Spain
Introduction to the significant aspects of the culture of Spain from its origins to the present. Emphasizes the artistic, social, historical, political, and contemporary issues of the Iberian Peninsula.
SPAN 310 - Spanish for Health Professionals
Medical concepts and terminology in Spanish; designed for students who plan to work in professions related to public health care.
SPAN 361 - Spanish Contemporary Literature
Introduction to the basic structures and elements of fiction, poetry, drama, and essay, including literary and critical theory, with readings in 19th-, 20th-, and 21st- century Spanish literature.
SPAN 301 - Advanced Spanish
Through conversation, composition, dictation, and intensive grammar review, proficiency is stressed. Includes literary readings and cultural perspectives
SPAN 301 - Food and Culture in Spain
Practice in spoken and written Spanish with an emphasis on the cultural and historical implications of religion on the contemporary cuisine in Spain. The course includes site visits and interactive lessons.
SPAN 4180 - Technical Spanish for Health Management Professionals
Technical health communication course in Spanish with emphasis on managerial and business aspects of the international health industry.
SPAN 4190 - Health and the Hispanic Community
Study of cultural aspects of health and health services in Hispanic populations. Includes emphasis on social determinants of health in immigrant and Spanish-speaking populations in the United States. Taught in Spanish

CH 1010 + 1011 - General Chemistry I
Introduction to the elementary concepts of chemistry through classroom and laboratory experience. Emphasizes chemical reactions and the use of symbolic representation, the mole concept and its applications and molecular structure
CH 1020 + 1021 - General Chemistry II
Continuation of CH 1010, treating solutions, rates of reactions, chemical equilibrium, electrochemistry, chemistry of selected elements, and an introduction to organic chemistry.
BIOL 1030 + 1050 - General Biology I
Biology course that includes evolutionary approach to cells, cellular activities, genetics, and animal diversity emphasizing the processes of science.
BIOL 1040 + 1060 - General Biology II
Continuation of BIOL 1030 + 1050. Includes an evolutionary approach to human anatomy and physiology, plant diversity, morphology, and physiology and principles of ecology.
CH 2230 + 2270 - Organic Chemistry
Introductory course in the principles of organic chemistry and the derivation of these principles from a study of the properties, preparations, and interrelationships of the important classes of organic compounds.
BCHM 3050 - Essential Elements of Biochemistry
Introduction to structure, synthesis, metabolism and function of biomolecules in living organisms. Emphasis on key biochemical pathways, enzyme function, and metabolism, with applications in medicine and biotechnology
MICR 3050 - General Microbiology with Lab
Course that focuses on morphology, physiology, classification, distribution, and cultivation of microorganisms.
GEN 3000 - Fundamental Genetics
Introductory course covering fundamental principles of genetics in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Emphasizes Mendelian genetics, physical and chemical basis of heredity, and population genetics.
HEALTH SCIENCE
HLTH 2020 - Introduction to Public Health
This introduction to public health course explores the forces that influence current health delivery systems, health practices, and trends. A thorough examination of population and public health theroies and models is also completed.
HLTH 2030 - Overview of Healthcare Systems
Provides an overview of health care systems as it introduces contexts on the American health care delivery system, specifically its foundation, primary characterisitics, resources, and processes. Furthermore, fee-for-service, managed care, and integrated care organizations that correlate with the ideas of access, cost, and quality of care are discussed
HLTH 2400 - Determinants of Health Behavior
This determinants of health behavior course analyzes health behavior based on psychological, social, cultural, and environmental factors through the introduction of health behavior theories.
HLTH 2980 - Human Health and Disease
Human health and disease course that overviews behavioral, biological, and psyco-social factors that correlate with major human diseases and conditions. This course also emphasizes the best health practices to reduce diseases and negative conditions.
HLTH 3800 - Epidemiology
Introduction to epidemiology principles and methods that are used to study the origin, distribution, and control of disease.
HLTH 4900 - Research and Evaluation Strategies for Public Health
Focuses on research and evaluation strategies for public health with an emphasis on the analysis of reported research. The concepts of ethical, moral, and legal issues in relation to research are also discussed.
HLTH 4700 - Global Health
Introduction to global health concepts that aim to deepen student's knowledge of global health and how public health work is conducted on an international level. This course also presents the concepts of assessment of international health needs and designing, implementing, managing, and evaluating public health programs in international settings.
HLTH 3250 - Infectious Disease and Exposures
Introduction to communicable diseases commonly seen worldwide, and methods used to identify, treat, control and prevent these infections. Students examine how individuals with an infectious disease are a special population that requires a different level of care when being treated within a health system or within the community.
HLTH 4000 - Foundations of Rural Health
This course introduces students to rural health and the unique social, economic, and cultural influences on the health of those in rural communities. It provides an examination of how those in rural communities experience health disparities and ways to achieve rural health equity. There is a focus on unique subgroups within rural communities and how specific social, environment, economic, and behavior determinants influence health.
HLTH 2600 - Medical Terminology and Communication
Skills in building, analyzing, defining, pronouncing, and spelling medical terms related to the human body are developed and applied through electronic communication.
